Paul and Aidan did themselves and Point Blank proud at Warrior's Quest 2 in Letterkenny at the weekend, taking home a victory each against tough Donegal opponents.
Paul was first out on the night, fight number 6. The cage at Warrior's Quest was full size UFC (24' Diameter) and well constructed, great spring off the fence and decent padding on the mat. Paul had worked hard on his stand up since his last match and was looking forward to testing it out in the Octagon, unfortunately Anthony Rodgers from Donegal Jiu Jitsu Federation had other ideas. As soon as Paul threw his first punch the Donegal man shot to get the fight to the ground, Paul countered and after some position changes on the ground Paul escaped a momentary side mount to take full mount. From there he landed some very strong punches to the chest of Rodgers, who duly obliged Paul by lifting his elbows. Paul spun for the arm bar and got the tap.

Aidan was the next fight up against another local man coached by Josie Murray in the Donegal Jiu Jitsu Federation, Jason Ward. Aidan landed a jab on their first contact and was immediately headlocked by Ward. Despite Aidan's best escape attempts he couldn't escape for a full 2 and a half minutes! Once the head lock released however Aidan went to work and took mouont, pounding the Donegal fighter from that position to the end of the round. Round two was a very different animal, the artist formerly known as "Carnage" Carney had felt the measure of his opponent's strength now, each time Jason went for the headlock, it seemed to be his go-to technique, Aidan escaped, took his back, mounted him, and generally dominated him for the round duration. His opponent was doced a point for strikes to the head form underneath mount (!), but it would have made no difference either way as it looked to me like Aidan had taken both rounds solidly.
An excellent night for Point Blank, well done lads!

The latest addition to the Point Blank timetable is a Thai Boxing class coached by stand-up afficionado Tom "The Catastrophe" Kelly. The first class last night saw a good turn out from Point Blank members, and as word starts to spread about the high qiality of Tom's instruction, the crowd will no doubt grow and grow.
"Tom breaks down the techniques well, I found it easy to understand how to generate power in strikes I always struggled with before this" one enthusiastic student commented. The pacing of the class is slow for now" Coach Kelly commented, " I want to make sure everyone has a solid tecnical grounding before moving on to working harder". No doubt they will afte ra few classes with Point Blank's Thai Boxing maestro, we wish Tom the best of luck with the classes in the future!
Thai Boxing is a mixed level class at 7pm Wednesdays, all levels are accepted and there is no extra charge for the class, its part of the Point Blank monthly subscription.

Saturday 12th of September saw a large contingent of Point Blank fighters take to the MMA League once more in Kilkenny, in what was the largest MMA League round ever in the event's 6 year history, 138 fighters came from every corner of the country for a tremendous event.
The Point Blank team above - Ollie, Sean, Ayman, Dave, Gary and Alan and not pictured is Bobby (presumably not pictured because he won his two fights in less than a minute and was already on the road home!) took an impressive haul of points from the event and have set themselves up well for the final round in Dublin on the 21st of November. Well done lads, you did us proud! |
