At the last Point Blank class before the Christmas Break some students were honored for their contributions and success in 2009.

The Teen class has grown considerably in 2009 and many strong candidates were presented for Junior Student of the Year. The winner was Bobby Huxford who's success in the League, constant attendance and the help he gives in classes and to other students are exemplary. Congratulations Bobby!

Senior Student of the Year was an even tighter race with many Point Blank members giving so much of their time and commitment to the gym, in the end the winner was Gary Mannion for being the first to training every night, the last to leave, competing every chance he got and always taking the time to help out. Thoroughly deserved Gary, well done!

The final award to be presented was done so in abstentia as the winner couldn't make it though the ice to the gym for his award. For success in the cage and a warrior spirit hard to top the award for Point Blank Gym Top Gun (Fighter of the Year) went to Enda Fenton.

The last class went off well with a mixed level bunch playing a variety of different wrestling and grappling festive games including "Steal the Stocking" and the Kids Class favorite "Jiu Jitsu Virus", we rounded out the night with some tag team grappling before breaking for two weeks. We even found time to give Sifu "Mad Dog" Murphy a present! (my how he has grown!)

Its that time of year once again when Point Blank closes its doors for the Christmas Holidays. Its the only time all year that the gym shuts, but don't worry its a shorter than usual break this year.

The last class of the year will be Monday the 21st of December at 7pm (all levels).

This will be a festively themed class and will strike the right note leading into New Years as we will award the Junior and Senior Student of the Year awards and crown the Point Blank Gym Top Gun (Fighter of the Year if you prefer). We will also have a coach death match for the coveted prize of Coach of the Year

Leave a comment on this article if you want to put anyone forward for these awards, or drop me an email on info[at]PointBlankGym[dot]ie for you shy types!

The gym will re-open on Tuesday the 5th of January for Intermediates and Thursday the 7th for Beginners

From all of us on the coaching staff at Point Blank Gym I hope you all have a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Agony and Ecstasy at MMA League Dublin

It was a huge event in St. Andrews College in Dublin, the venue for MMA League Dublin, 130 fighters converged from all around the country to vie for the coveted titles of League Champion. The band of Point Blank fighters had to brave through the floods and the rain to make it to Dublin for this event, but Spirits were high when they arrived. The Point Blank League Team of Darren, Dave, Ollie, Bobby, Liam, Michael, Gary, Sean and Alan lined out with the other hopefuls to try and make their mark in the annals of League History forever.

Daren and Sean both demonstrated great improvement since there last run out at the League, though both wound up only having one match, the consistent training paid dividends in their matches, Sean's savvy grappling under pressure and Darren's able technique made for fast paced matches that had them both in the ascendancy for the duration. Darren was able to covert this dominance to a win, but Sean fell slightly short, as his opponent kept a python like grip on his neck that made executing a finish very difficult.

Gary asked to be matched with Division Champion Robert Arlovsky, and just didn't find his rhythm against the tremendously capable Arlovsky, presumably a  brother to Andre. His second match the Gary we know emerged again taking the match by the scruff from the get go and netting a win by Arm Bar. Alan's first opponent made GSP look out of shape , and his tremendous physique was no false front belying a strong wrestling and grappling, Alan weathered the storm to emerge with a draw. His second match was a back and forth exchange of technical excellence that saw the round finish scoreless with Alan in mount prepared to fire a submission attempt but just out of time.

Michael decided to take the bull by the horns and get into the League for the first time in the final event, a risky proposition as the amount of first timers around were much fewer. Mike proved he has more than enough cahones for the event, taking his first match up by DQ and going the distance in his second, a tremendous achievement for someone training a relatively short time. Dave showed greatly improved striking in both his matches, and an air of confidence that will serve him well in events to come, but sometimes things just don't quite fall right, regardless how well you are doing and he couldn't land the submission.

Liam was up against a more experienced fighter in the finals of his teen division and it was uphill from the off. Liam moved well and avoided taking dmaage in the striking range, on the ground i was all he could do to hold off Spartan MMA's Thomas Martin as he attacked with an array of submissions. In the end he succumbed to an Arm Bar, but has nothing to be ashamed of. In his second match up you could see vengeance etched in his stance as the fight began and he did just that reversing the outcome of his previous match to earn a win by arm bar.

Ollie O'Neill carried the second of Galway's 3 League Championship hopes with him into the finals against John Murphy. The two had a back and forth opening minute, but Ollie started to score points for remaining on top and landing damage. Towards the end of the round just as it seemed the title had to be coming to Point Blank he took mount and landed a punch to the face of his opponent. Referee Owen Roddy administered the compulsory disqualification giving Murphy the win and relegating the people's champ to runner-up for 09. A cruel twist of fate for a tremendous year for Ollie, but have no doubt the most changed man in Point Blank Gym will be back in 2010.

Bobby Huxford may as well have been in a League on his own this year, the 16 year old version of GSP took all of his matches this year by sweet submission victory and the Dublin Leg was to be no exception. He decimated his opponents taking both victories by righteous arm bar. Bobby Huxford, the new MMA League Teen Welterweight Champion is an inspiration to fighters many years his senior. Well done Bobby, you are the quintessential Ultimate Fighter!

Dave Jones Seminar Report
Written by MarkLeonard
Thursday, 12 November 2009 15:45
dave_jones_seminarFriday night featured Next Generation coach Dave Jones running a seminar in the gym, his first visit to Point Blank, and it surely won't be his last! Dave is probably better known to most of the Galway faithful in his capacity as Tribal Warfare referee; Dave is one of Ireland's top referees and officiates for shows around the country.

Over the two hours of the seminar Dave took us through a series of chokes and strangles all daisy chained together by counters and re-counters, which made them that much easier to remember. Its small surprise that Dave has been so successful in BJJ given the level of detail he has on each technique he relayed. The D'arce choke has been a problematic submission to finish without piling on the squeeze for many students and it was amazing the way Dave was able to break it down so everyone could finish it with a minimum of squeezing and no cranking to their opponent. Every avenue of counter and re-counter was explored from there providing ample opportunity for Dave to demonstrate the depth of his knowledge in this area.

Dave always comes across as a friendly easy going guy, and his demeanor carries into his coaching, the two hours flew past as he kept us entertained between and during technique descriptions. Although we gained a massive amount of material for just over two hours training, its pretty evident that this was only the tip of the ice berg. Dave's no-gi approach and his awareness of the realities of MMA made him particularly well suited to gym's like Point Blank. Feedback from the participants at the seminar was extremely enthuiastic and we can't wait to have Dave back in the gym again.
